About the parish
In 1748, a wooden St Anthony’s Church was built on the grounds of the old Polish cemetery. It was damaged during the Koliivshchyna uprising of 1768–1769.
The masonry Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between 1780 and 1825. Its benefactor, Stanisław Feliks (Szczęsny) Potocki, began the work, and his son Aleksander Potocki completed it. Bishop Borovskyi consecrated the church in honour of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 15.08.1826.
In 1930, part of the cemetery grounds, together with the parish priest’s house, outbuildings and stables, became part of the bakery’s property.
The church was closed in 1935. During 1980–1990 and afterwards, Fr Jan Krapan visited to provide pastoral ministry.
In 1990, Fr Józef Pawluk OFM began seeking the return of the church building, celebrating Mass on its steps.
In 1991, after an attempt to enter and bless the church, Fr Józef Pawluk OFM and several parishioners were detained for three days at the local police station.
After many years, the Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was registered on 03.10.1991.
In 1998, the Bishop of Zhytomyr appointed a permanent priest for the Uman parish, Fr Anatolii Monzhyievskyi.
A private house on Urytskoho Lane, now Arkasa Lane, was purchased and converted into a parish chapel and accommodation for the priest.
