St Eugene de Mazenod and Holy Guardian Angels Parish (Slavutych)

In December 1995, Catholics living in Slavutych asked the pastor of the Roman Catholic parish in Chernihiv for spiritual care. From then on, Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate began visiting Slavutych.

In 1996, Bishop Jan Purwiński established the parish in Slavutych, dedicating it to St Eugene de Mazenod and the Holy Guardian Angels. For the first few years, the faithful gathered in private homes, cultural centres and municipal community halls.

In 2000, the city authorities allocated land to the Catholics for construction. On 19 March, Auxiliary Bishop Stanislav Shyrokoradiuk OFMCap blessed the plot. That same year, the Missionary Oblates began building a chapel and priest’s house. The first Mass was celebrated in the basement of the unfinished building on 21 May 2001, the liturgical memorial of the parish patron, St Eugene de Mazenod. A year later, Archbishop Nikola Eterović, Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, blessed the chapel and priest’s house.

The first pastor was appointed in 2002, marking the beginning of regular pastoral ministry.
